More women should join the legal profession, Prof Khawar Qureshi said on Monday. He was addressing a seminar titled: Women in the Legal Fraternity and Role of Women in the Judiciary at the Nadra Hassan Law Department (NHLD) of Kinnaird College for Women University, Lahore. Qureshi talked about the challenges faced by women in the legal profession. “The problems exist not only in Pakistan, but all over the world. Law is a competitive profession,” he said. Qureshi said that there were a number of eminent women in the legal profession in Pakistan. “More women should join the legal profession as there is a need for women in the judiciary,” he said.
During the interactive session, students asked question about the legal profession. NHLD Board Member Jawad Hassan welcomed Qureshi and spoke on the importance of legal education in Pakistan. “NHLD is the first law school for women in Pakistan,” he said. The session was moderated by Sahar Bandial, a LUMS adjunct faculty member.
NHLD Head Ayesha Jawad, faculty members and a large number of students were present. Qureshi is a practicing barrister who is the youngest Asian to be appointed as Queen’s Counsel. He has been teaching at Cambridge University; Kings College London; the London School of Economics; and the University of London.
