Dubai in conversation

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Anwer Mooraj’s column, “Dubai as I once knew the place” (April 17). I fully agree with him that the attitude of our diplomats is most undesirable. They always display an imperious attitude towards their fellow countrymen. It is true, not only at the ambassador level but even at the level of secretaries and counsellors. They display the same attitude towards locals. As Mr Mooraj has pointed out, the attitude of the Indian diplomats is quite different. In Saudi Arabia, India has always tried to keep a Muslim as their ambassador. While the embassies were in Jeddah, it was a routine practice for the Indian ambassador to go to Haram Sharif on Fridays and mix with the local people and his compatriots as well, whereas the Pakistani ambassador was hardly ever visible. This imperious attitude of our diplomats is the reason our embassies fail to attract any business for the country in those places. The condition remains the same whether the ambassador is from the Foreign Service or a retired army personnel. It is very important that our diplomats inculcate the spirit of humility so that they can perform their duties in the best interests of the country.
