The top election supervisory body indefinitely postponed elections for reserved seats in the two provinces on Thursday, In a surprise move that is likely to further delay formation of local governments (LGs) in Punjab and Sindh,.
Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) notification stated that the commission was postponing the polls since the ‘matter’ is subjudice. However, the statement did not elaborate any further.
In Punjab, elections for indirect seats of district councils, municipal and metropolitan corporations were scheduled for February 8. The elections for municipal committees and union councils were to take place respectively on February 11 and February 14.
The ECP officials, when contacted, did not give any valid reasons for the postponement.
