ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to article on “The Taxation System and Child Rights” by Arshad Mahmood (September 3). The writer has accurately highlighted the ineffective taxation system of Pakistan and its adverse effects on the already deteriorating child rights situation of the country. Although the basic needs of children have been well understood by the relevant stakeholders on various occasions, ineffective implementation of desired laws and legislation has revealed their non-serious attitude towards the issue.

It is already apparent that social indicators in Pakistan are considerably low and its ranking on the Human Development Index is lower than countries that have a lower per capita income. This situation needs the immediate attention of those in power to effectively plan future strategy for enhanced expenditure on this sector. More importantly, due consideration is required to increase investments for basic child rights in the areas of health, education and protection, all in the attempt to secure the future of the country. Because, if concerted efforts are not made in this regard, it is obvious that the present situation of children will further deteriorate.
