KARACHI:

A Karachi court on Wednesday rejected a plea filed by the head of controversial IT firm Axact and eight others for better facilities in prison.

Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh, COO Viqas Atique and other officials moved the application before District South top judge Ahmed Saba under rule 248 of the Pakistan Prison Rules which pertains to the classification of the under-trial prisoners (UTP).

“There shall be only two classes of UTPs: better class and ordinary class. Better class will include those who by social status, education or habit of life have been accustomed to a superior mode of living,” the rule states.

The petitioners, in their application, requested better facilities in prison in light of their being educated and accustomed to better social and living standards.

The judge, however, dismissed the application observing that no documents like educational certificates, tax returns supporting the suspects’ claim were provided to the court.

Meanwhile, another district court gave the Federal Investigation Agency three more days to submit final challan against the suspects.

Noor Muhammad Kalmati, South’s judicial magistrate, approving the investigators plea also issued a show cause notice to the city’s jail superintendent for not producing the suspects before him.’

On the other hand, the Sindh High Court issued notices to Labaik TV owner and detained Axact CEO over a petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against him.
